The Sigma 150-600 Sport focuses quite fast on a Nikon D300 and blazing fast on a Nikon D500. The bare Nikon 300mm f2.8 may be a touch faster, hard to differentiate a difference and the same is true with the 1.4x TC. The Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for Canon with Fringer EF to Fuji X is blazing fast on my Fuji X-T3.

Macro The 1.4x III Extender has some useful implications in macro work, offering an extra 40%

Totally agree. I have used both Sigma lenses on Sony camera via adapter and found 60-600 to have great sharpness but AF wasn't good enougJh for BIF so I'm hoping it will work better on R5. Assuming a lens works It basically comes down to cost v's IQ - the 150-600 is cheapest option the 60-600 is almost double at £1400 and the canon 100-500 300/2.8 + 2x gives 600/5.6 and you still have AF. The 300/2.8 is good with teleconverters, but only you can answer whether the $4000 cost is "worth it." The most economical alternatives for greater reach but still maintain AF are the Sigma 50-500 f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM and the Tamron 200-500 f/5-6.3 Di LD.
I have the Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 c with the 1.4 teleconverter by sigma, and an Eos 80D. I'm very surprised how sharp your image is. I always found my images to be sharper when photographing without tc. I even send all this gear to sigma for adjustment, but still don't get such amazing results. Guess i need to try harder in future :D

Here's where I'm coning from. I have a Canon T7 with the 75-300 lens. Some of you will recall I had inquired about the Sigma 150-600 lens. I was browsing through Lenses and found a conversation that mentioned keeping a lens that goes to 300mm and getting a converter. Canon's converter is cheaper than buying a new Sigma 150-600 lens.
Hey folks, considering the ef 800 f5.6 or the EF 600 F4with a 1.4 extender III. Does anyone know if autofocus with the 600 and extender would be slower than the EF 800? My camera is an R5. The 600 would be the version II Mr. If you haven't yet done it, you might want to try and find some physical examples of these lenses to try out.
Just imagine, a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4-5.6L II IS USM lens combined with a EF 1.4x III extender gives you a focal length of 560mm. Although the focal length is only 40mm shorter compared to the RF
