I've been able to use the keyboard + controller option for a few weeks but yesterday after starting the game, I got a pop-up asking if I wanted to use the controller to control the mouse in menus. I accepted and that works fine but now my keyboard and mouse won't work in the game. They work fine if I have keyboard only selected. I then turned off the option to use the controller for the mouse
After that we click "view layout" to start binding. Here we pick the "driving" menu and click on any key to bind it (i chose the RB/RT buttons). You will get this menu, and from here you can basically start inputting your desired commands on respective controller bindings.

Click on Library > Go to Games under the Browse section. Select Euro Truck Simulator 2 > Click on Manage Games (Gear Icon). Choose Controller Options from the Steam Input option. That info is out of date. remove checkmark next to "Generic Gamepad Configuration Support". also disable "Guide Button Focuses Steam". Click the "Back" button at the bottom of the screen. This might happen if you replied positively to the game question to use the controller for menu navigation. That feature is currently only suitable for use with gamepad like devices which center both X and Y axis by default. The 1.46 contains large changes to the Steam Input layers and actions. Steam Input does not provide way to gracefully convert the configurations and the old configurations would not work properly so we had to mark all old configs as incompatible.
